Stephen Ministry

Do you hear God calling…

The Stephen Ministry Program was re-established here at Community United Methodist Church in 2012. We currently have six Stephen Ministers and three Stephen Leaders. We have walked with church members and non-church members during times of crisis and loss. We provide a confidential and caring Christian presence with no judgment. We listen and pray for our care recievers and let them know that God loves them even when their world is turning upside down. We also bring Communion to shut-ins and visit people in the hospital when our pastoral staff needs some extra help. Our Stephen Ministers are available to be God’s vessel in ministering to spiritual needs of the heart.

Do you hear God calling you to this type of ministry? A Fall training will be available at Mesa Verde UMC. (Date and time TBD) This is fifty hours of valuable training that will equip you in all your life-long relationships, including Stephen Ministry.

Am I qualified? You are, if you have a heart for others that are hurting and are available for meetings at CUMC the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of the month. Pop Up Event a SUCCESS!

[su_heading size=”16″]Pop Up Event provided health and school supplies for the homeless students of Golden West College.[/su_heading]

Thank you to all who participated in our 1st ever Pop Up Event for homeless students at Golden West College.  We packed over 80 backpacks and other bags full of health supplies and college supplies!

The event happened due to a plea to the Greater Huntington Beach Interfaith Council from the president of Golden West College.  We were asked to help 100 homeless students and they needed it done in 10 days!  CUMC stepped up to the plate and provided the venue, people, and items and other places of worship joined in the effort.  We found out of the need on Tuesday and the event was on Sunday!  Way to respond quickly CUMC!

DRIVE AND BUILDING POP-UP EVENT

Did you know that over 100 students at Golden West College in Huntington
Beach are homeless? This event created by the Greater Huntington Beach
Interfaith Council (GHBIC) allows the community to show up and provide a little
help by putting together Blessing Bags for those in need on Sunday, 7/30/17 at
Community United Methodist Church in Huntington Beach (6652 Heil Avenue,
Huntington Beach, CA 92647).

What is a Blessing Bag?

A Blessing Bag is a backpack or reusable grocery bag filled with toiletries, school
supplies, bus passes, food gift cards, and a note or drawing of encouragement
from a child or other community member. These bags will be distributed to the
students in need at GWC.

What can you do?

1) DONATE MONEY

Donate any dollar amount via one of the following channels.

Homeless Students. Any additional funds over and above those needed to help this immediate
group will be donated to a local organization that helps the homeless including Beach Cities
Interfaith Services, Build Futures, and/or American Family Housing.

Make check donations payable to Greater Huntington Beach Interfaith Council (memo: “for
GWC Homeless Students”) and drop off at Community United Methodist Church (CUMC) on
Heil by Sunday morning.

Homeless Action Advocacy Group Meeting

Agenda for Meeting in the Sanctuary – 7:00 PM

Introductory Statement- We initially re-convened the Homeless Advocacy  Group to address the needs of housing for low income and homeless in HB, and our neighbors but after our second meeting, BCIS was given a 30 day and then a 6month eviction notice. They serve over 2,000 a year and are our primary emergency resource agency. We had a prayer vigil on 7/5/2017 and spoke to the City Council on 7/17/2017. When we address housing needs at the same time as addressing the eviction of BCIS?

  1. Update from Reverend Maurer and Barbara Delgleize and Billy O’Connell, if they are able to attend.
  2. Discuss our next steps;
  3. Have people speak at each City Council meeting with news coverage, to speak against eviction of BCIS and to advocate for the housing needs of the homeless in HB and sister cities
  4. Discuss legal action
  5. Find an alternative site for BCIS and  raise funds to procure this site
  6. Circulate petitions to allow BCIC to stay in their present location for 2 years
  7. Start a bond initiative provide services for the homeless in HB
  8. Work with sister cities to develop a regional plan for the homeless, including housing. This would include Fountain Valley, Westminster and Seal Beach.

Help the Homeless – Save BCIS from Eviction

City Council Meeting 7/17 at 6:00 PM – Wear RED

Come to City Council Meeting on 7/17 at 6:00PM to support Beach Cities Interfaith Service. We are gathering as a group of supporters at 5:45PM. Wear RED, which means Stop the Eviction and tell as many people as you know.

Beach Cities Interfaith Service is a non-profit organization in Huntington Beach that serves the homeless community. We at CUMC work directly with them and depend on them to distribute aid such as clothing, food, bus passes, help with bills, and urgent needs. They are in immediate danger of being closed down by the city.
