Hikes

If getting out in nature and hiking with some friends sounds like a good way to spend your Saturday once a month than this opportunity is for you. All hikes are moderate hikes that are family friendly. . Our hike this month will be in Whiting Ranch. This hike takes us on a gently climbing trail through an oak woodland canyon and ending in a smooth red rock canyon. We will meet at 9:00 AM on July 16th at the Portella parking lot.The cost to park is $5 per car. You will want to wear hiking shoes or good walking shoes and a hat. You will need sunscreen, a small backpack to carry your water (16oz or more per person) and any snacks you will want. To be good stewards of God’s creation and courteous to other hikers our group size is limited to 14 people. Reservations will be a first come first serve and can be made by emailing Mary Boyd at mmmwboyd@verizon.net.

The Difficult Words of Jesus

by

Wednesday Evening Study on Zoom 6 Weeks
August 18– September 22 7:00pm
Subscribe to emails for Meeting ID and Passcode

Jesus provided his disciples teachings for how to follow Torah, God’s word; he told them parables to help them discern questions of ethics and of human nature; he offered them beatitudes for comfort and encouragement. But sometimes Jesus spoke words that followers then and now have found difficult. He instructs disciples to hate members of their own families (Luke 14:26), to act as if they were slaves (Matthew 20:27), and to sell their belongings and give to the poor (Luke 18:22). He restricts his mission (Matthew 10:6); he speaks of damnation (Matthew 8:12); he calls Jews the devil’s children (John 8:44).

In The Difficult Words of Jesus, Amy-Jill Levine shows how these difficult teachings would have sounded to the people who first heard them, how have they been understood over time, and how we might interpret them in the context of
the Gospel of love and reconciliation.

We hope that you will join us for a fun night of many activities and dinner.  During our Celebration we will be having a baptism.  If you have been thinking about a baptism for someone in your family, please reach out and we would be happy to talk with you if this would be a good time for your family. A Film-Based Dialogue Series on Race & Faith

This is a race dialogue series designed for these times. It is an attempt to be responsive to the profound challenges that currently exist in our society. It is focused on the challenges that swirl around issues of race  and racism, as well as the difficult but respectful and transformative dialogue we need to have with each other about them. There are two opportunities for this class. In person on Tuesday’s at 1pm-3pm. We will  watch the film and discuss afterwards. For the online class, an email with the link to the film will go out the  Friday  with the discussion of the film on Wednesday at 7:00pm on Zoom.

You will need to register with Suzanne to be in the online class. This is because most of the films are copyrighted and protected access. You can register by emailing Suzanne at SuzanneATcumchb.org.

For more information regarding this class please check our emails or visit episcopalchurch.org/sacred-grounds.
