Making Sense of the Bible – Tuesday Morning Study

by

We’re opening our Tuesday Morning Bible Study to everyone.  We will be studying “Making Sense of the Bible” by Rev. Adam Hamilton and reading a chapter a week at home to discuss during our weekly meeting time.  This will give us extra time to spend learning how the Bible came to help us to understand the nature of scripture in a more complete way.   That means we will be reading and studying this book for a years as there are 32 chapters.

You can join in this group at any time, if you are interested. All we ask you to do is keep up with the reading, if possible.  It promises to be a great study with lots of insight on how to interpret scripture and will change those new to reading the Bible as well as those who have been studying the Bible for decades.

Here is an is what Amazon says about “Making Sense of the Bible”:

“Denominations from evangelical to mainline continue to experience deep divisions over universal social issues. The underlying debate isn’t about a particular social issue, but instead it is about how we understand the nature of scripture and how we should interpret it. The world’s bestselling, most-read, and most-loved book is also one of the most confusing. In Making Sense of the Bible, Adam Hamilton, one of the country’s leading pastors and Christian authors, addresses the hot-button issues that plague the church and cultural debate, and answers many of the questions frequently asked by Christians and non-Christians alike.

Did God really command Moses to put gay people to death? Did Jesus really teach that everyone who is not a Christian will be assigned to hell? Why would Paul command women to keep silent in the church? Were Adam and Eve real people? Is the book of Revelation really about the end times? Who decided which books made it into the scriptures and why? Is the Bible ever wrong? In approachable and inviting language, Hamilton addresses these often misunderstood biblical themes leading readers to a deeper appreciation of the Bible so that we might hear God speak through it and find its words to be life-changing and life-giving.”

South District Opportunity to Hear Bishop Grant Hagiya’s Report from Commission on a Way Forward

by

Bishop Grant Hagiya to Present Report by Commission on a Way Forward
Sunday, September 16, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.
First UMC of San Diego
2111 Camino del Rio South, San Diego

Bishop Grant Hagiya will be in San Diego on September 16 to present the newly released report by the Commission on a Way Forward and explain the possible impacts of the report on the United Methodist Church, including changes which could conceivably restructure the very framework of the denomination. The resolution of this volatile issue has the possibility of critically dividing the church. Currently, the church considers homosexuality “incompatible with Christian teaching” and does not allow “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” to become clergy members, according to the Book of Discipline. It also does not offer church weddings to same-sex couples.

Bishop Hagiya is a member of the Commission on a Way Forward. Over the past year and a half, the 32-member Commission has completed an examination of every paragraph of the Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and has explored options to help maintain and strengthen the unity of the church. The Commission’s recommendations will be presented at a specially called UMC General Conference (the denomination’s top legislative body) in February 2019 for a vote by the delegation in attendance. The full report can be read here in four languages.

Share this invitation with everyone who would like to enter a thoughtful dialogue about LGBTQ+ inclusion and the future of the United Methodist Church.
