Psalm 94:19 Common English Bible (CEB)
19 When my anxieties multiply,
your comforting calms me down.
Living in a time where social distancing, lockdowns, reopening, looming lockdowns and constantly changing requirements can be a little crazy. I am normally not an anxious person, but even I feel anxious lately about what is happening. One of the problems is that we have no clue when anything will get back to what we called normal. I hope that during these times that you have a place that you can just sit and be, a place that has become sacred to you. A place where you can cry, vent, and let it all go, so that you can be filled up again by God’s love and comfort. We need to be able to let our anxieties go in order to create space for the love of God for each of us to take hold and calm our fears.
How we do this is as varied as humankind. Some like to run, some like to sit by themselves, some sing the blues. Me, I like to sit in my sacred place, which is outside on my back patio and look at my garden and see the hummingbirds, butterflies and other birds fly around. It truly has become my sacred place and I feel it when I have missed sitting there, even for one day. Being outside in nature restores my soul.
Another activity that restores my soul is yoga. The problem has been that the studio has only been doing online classes since the lockdown. While you think that I would make time for it at home, I do not. I need the structure of an in-person class. A couple of weeks ago the studio opened, which restrictions and safety precautions, and now I am able to attend class again a couple of times a week. I know that there is still a risk involved; however, for me that risk is worth it. Being able to practice yoga again has helped calmed my soul and revives my spirit and body.
We all need to find the things that restore our soul, spirit, and body. What are those things for you? Have you tried new restorative practices since our lockdown or started to do something that you used to love but had no time to do anymore? What feeds your soul? If it is going to museums, there are many virtual tours available. Many travel sites are now putting on virtual tours to distant places to keep people interested in travel once we can; however, those tours can also help restore our souls by taking us to another place. Perhaps a porch or a backyard visit with a dear friend, following social distancing, refreshes your spirit.
There are spiritual practices that help revive and renew our souls and spirit. Prayer and service to others are two that touch my spirit deeply. One of my favorite ways to pray is to walk around my neighborhood and pray for the people that live in the houses that I walk by. Even if I do not know them. This helps get me outside of what is happening in my life and concentrate on others and getting outside of myself and my own little problems refreshes my spirit and helps me gain perspective.
Gracious and Loving God, Help me to lean on you during times of stress and anxiety. Create a heart in me that feels your embrace around me. Help me to remember that these times are temporary, and your love is eternal. Help me to live out my faith in meaningful ways and to show through my actions your love for all of your creation. Amen
Grace & Peace, Suzanne
