It’s always good to consult with your family attorney when planning how your assets will be managed after you pass away, especially if you want that planning to include a charitable gift to CUMC or other charity which you support. And the time for making these kinds of important decisions is now, before unforeseen circumstances in your life or the lives of your family and loved ones may leave you unable to do that planning for yourself.
Specific Gift Language
Naming CUMC as a beneficiary of a specific amount from your estate and for a specific purpose:
“I give to Community United Methodist Church of Huntington Beach, whose address is 6652 Heil Avenue, Huntington Beach, CA 92647, Tax ID 95-2261801, a gift of $__________________________________ (insert either a dollar amount or a percentage or a specific asset such as a securities account), for its general use” (or state a specific use such as “Missionary Support” or “Foundation Scholarships” or “Food Closet” or “Foundation Grants” or “Organ maintenance”)
Residual Gift Language
A “residual bequest” comes to CUMC after your estate expenses and specific bequests are paid:
“I give to Community United Methodist Church of Huntington Beach, whose address is 6652 Heil Avenue, Huntington Beach, CA 92647, Tax ID 95-2261801, all (or state a percentage) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to be used for its general support” (or for the support of a specific purpose, fund or program ministry).”
Contingent Gift Language
CUMC can be named as a contingent beneficiary in your will or trust if one or more of your specific bequests cannot be fulfilled:
“If (insert name) is not living at the time of my demise, I give to Community United Methodist Church of Huntington Beach, whose address is 6652 Heil Avenue, Huntington Beach, CA 92647, Tax ID 95-2261801, the sum of $ _______ (or all, or a percentage) of the residue of my estate to be used for its general support” (or for the support of a specific purpose, fund or program ministry).
