United Methodist Women (UMW)
Purpose - The organized unit of United
Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know
God and experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to
develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of
mission through participation in the Global Ministries of the Church.
UMW
Organization - Our local UMW unit of CUMC-HB extends to the Santa
Ana District, to the Women’s Division of the California Pacific
Conference to National and International Women’s Division of the United
Methodist Church. As a part of this large group, we pledge money and
work for missions established by the Women’s Division of our
Conference. We receive newsletters from the District and the
Conference. For more information see
www.unitedmethodistwomen.com.
Our local unit
consists of seven circles and two quilting groups. The circles and quilters are open to all women of the church. Circles meet once a month
in private homes or at the church for fellowship and study.
It is not necessary to be a member of a circle or quilting group to
belong to UMW. Each month there is a General Meeting with
programs, refreshments, and fellowship.
Special
events - During the year our local UMW unit sponsors the following
special events: the Interfaith Breakfast to which we
invite women of our church and women of other faiths in the area, the
Hollywreath Brunch that is our gift to the women of CUMC-HB,
and Women’s Sunday, for which we select a
speaker and conduct the morning services. The
Boutique is held every two years on the first Saturday in
November. Craft items and baked goodies that are for sale are made
by UMW members and friends. Proceeds from the sale are used to
fund various missions.
Missions
- In addition to supporting the Global Ministries of the United
Methodist Church, we support local missions in our church and the
community. Within our local church we help with camp
scholarships and the Sierra Service Project. We give scholarships
to members of our congregation who are studying for the ministry.
In the community, we support Interval House, Project
Self-Sufficiency, and the Southwest Community Center.
